Abstract

Modern European football owes its appearance to England. Here, despite a number of public priorities (emphasis on amateur sports), its professional direction was born and initially developed. The basis for this was such factors as the high level of social development, the country's economic potential and the popularity of sports among the population. Purpose. To identify the chronology of the formation and development of professional football in Great Britain. The research material is data from historical scientific and popular science works on English football, official Internet resources of the Premier League and the Football League of England. Methods: analysis and synthesis, historical method, system-structural approach, theory, comparison. The results. The beginning of the era of professional football in England dates back to 1888, when the Football League was founded and the first club championship was held. Football was rapidly gaining popularity in the country, which encouraged the creation of more and more new teams and reaching a higher and higher level of development. Accordingly, the levels of English football were formed, and by 1958 there were already four divisions, the first of which included the strongest professional clubs. Stratification in the competition system still did not allow the Football League to maintain a monopoly in English football, and in 1992 the Premier League was created, which remains the highest level of football in the country to this day, and the Football League took the second tier. A characteristic of English football today is the rotation of teams between levels (two professional and 24 in total in the country), depending on the performance of the season. At the global level, English football remains the most skillful and spectacular, the country's football club teams today occupy the highest positions in international competitions under the auspices of UEFA, and the country's national championship is the highest in the ranking as of 2024.
