Abstract

Abstract. The article presents current state of research of physical therapy in the setting of emergent surgical abdominal pathology, summarizes available research and publications, as well as current standards and protocols of assistance in this pathology. The aim of the study was to outline the theoretical and practical approach of physical therapy in treatment of acute abdominal surgical pathology. For this purpose, the literature, current regulatory acts governing the provision of medical care for these diseases, was analyzed. Analysis of scientific sources has shown that this section of surgical pathology remains one of the problems of modern scientific research and practical medicine. Emergent surgical abdominal issues are the largest group of diseases in surgical practice, the treatment of which requires significant logistic, structural, professional and financial resources. Latest comprehensive studies emphasize the complexity of the treatment algorithm for major urgent abdominal pathologies, which includes surgical, anaesthesiology, diagnostic, radiation, physiotherapy and nutritional support. At the same time, role of physical therapy in the treatment of acute surgical abdominal pathology remains unclear, and available scientific and practical data is having not been translated to health care practice standards. Physical therapy is essentially absent from acute abdominal surgical treatment protocols in Ukraine. Some scholars have shown the impact of physical therapy on outcomes in emergency abdominal surgical pathology – total and postoperative mortality, postoperative pulmonary and cardiac complications, duration of hospital stay etc. However, the available evidence from randomized trials remains weak due to lack of coherent system of physical therapy for this condition, which limits the assessment of treatment outcomes, the results of research and clinical trials are contradictory, and no final conclusions have been received. Conclusion. Literature search demonstrates that the role of physical therapy in the treatment of emergency abdominal surgical pathology remains unclear, and the results of research and practical experience have not been implemented in Ukraine's health care system.
